Comparing OTC Tooth Whitening Products with Professional In-Office Procedures

SUNNYVALE, California — June 16, 2006 — In the United States, teeth whitening is the single most requested cosmetic procedure among dental patients between the ages of 20 and 50.

Five years ago the popularity of tooth whitening began to increase dramatically with the introduction of popular home whitening products. However many people still turn to their dental professionals for a more convenient, effective tooth whitening treatment.

So given all the options currently available to customers, how do you determine what is the best tooth whitening option for you?

According to the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS), almost all whitening products on the market will whiten teeth to a certain extent because they all have the same active ingredients, either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. However, the percentage of the active ingredient in whitening products varies between what a professional in-office treatment will use and what over-the-counter products will contain.

Over-the-counter whitening products will contain about five percent or less of an active whitening ingredient; whereas professional whitening products available in a dental office will have between 10 and 35 percent of the active whitening ingredient. This regulation is for the safety of the consumer, but it also translates as thus: Professional tooth whitening techniques will whiten teeth faster than over-the-counter whitening products, oftentimes with better, more dramatic results.
